dc.descriptionThe outstanding diversity of birdlife recorded for Ecuador is key to the developmentof a sustainable ornithological tourism that can support local communitiesand be environmentally friendly. Globally, birdwatching is an important branchof ecotourism known to benefit local communities within a framework of sustainability.Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the past and presentof the ornithology as well as birdwatching tourism in Ecuador, with the prospectiveview to protect the habitat of birds and to empower local communities via asustainable birdwatching tourism. The text includes (i) a detailed description offour principal birdwatching geographic routes which allows visitors from aroundthe world to observe endemic, migrant and rare birds in different ecosystems ofthe Pacific coastal lowlands and islands, the Amazonian region, and the Andeanhighlands and (ii) an upgrading of 2017 reports describing new bird sightings inEcuador. The term bird-trekking is proposed for the modality of half day to onedaybirdwatching walks along river beds, waterfalls and streams close to citieswithout professional guides or sophisticated equipment other than a GPS and adigital map.en-US
dc.descriptionLa mega biodiversidad de aves en Ecuador ha sido el factor clave para el desarrollodel aviturismo, considerado la modalidad más sustentable del ecoturismo,la menos invasiva a la cultura de las comunidades y la menos agresiva contra lanaturaleza. El aviturismo sustentable constituye una importante rama del ecoturismointernacional con beneficios socio-económicos para el país. Por lo tanto,el objetivo de este trabajo es presentar una revisión del pasado y del presentedel aviturismo en Ecuador con una visión prospectiva hacia el desarrollo de unsistema nacional de aviturismo sustentable cuyo fin sea conservar los hábitats delas aves y empoderar a las comunidades que habitan en zonas protegidas. El textoincluye: (i) la descripción de cuatro rutas geográficas principales que permitena los avevistores de todo el mundo admirar de cerca la avifauna migratoria yendémica en ecosistemas que van desde la costa e islas del Océano Pacifico y laAmazonia hasta las cumbres de la Cordillera de Los Andes, y (ii) la actualizaciónde nuevos avistamientos de aves en el periodo 2017-2020. Se propone el términode avisenderismo para la modalidad de observar la gran biodiversidad de aves ensenderos que circundan cursos de ríos, quebradas y riachuelos cercanos a ciudadesdurante medio o un día completo sin necesidad de equipamientos sofisticadoso guías profesionales, solo con el uso de un GPS y un mapa digital.es-ES
