dc.descriptionThis article explores the feasibility of including the Military Dictatorship of General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (Chile, 1927-1931) among Latin America’s “classic” mid-twentieth century populist experiences. To that end, it focuses on its policies of labor legislation and working-class appeal, aimed at mitigating social conflicts through institutional co-optation and the expansion of State functions, invoking the restoration of a compromised “national unity.” It uses administrative and journalistic sources from the time and concludes that ibañista strategies managed to attract considerable popular support, thus making them comparable, in terms of both its aims and its results, to more extensively studied cases of “classic populism”.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo explora la posibilidad de incluir a la dictadura de Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (1927-1931) dentro de las experiencias latinoamericanas que alguna literatura ha denominado “populismo clásico”. Para ello se pone el acento en las políticas de legislación social y acercamiento a las clases trabajadoras desarrolladas por dicho régimen, destinadas a atenuar la conflictividad popular por la vía de la cooptación institucional y la ampliación de las funciones del Estado, invocando el restablecimiento de la “unidad nacional”. Se apoya a tal efecto en fuentes administrativas y periodísticas de la época, y se concluye que las prácticas ibañistas lograron concitar un apoyo popular considerable, lo que permite asimilarlas, tanto en sus propósitos como en sus resultados, a los casos más estudiados de “populismo clásico”.es-ES
