The existence since 1536 of a Camino Real that crossed through Quillota and which is associated with the tambo is supported by various sources. It has been repeatedly called the “tambo viejo." Its location has been probably traditional since 1561 because the building built by the Spaniards only has continued the occupation in the same space such as the tambo since the Inca period. It is possible that the sector has been densely populated by indigenous of Quillota, which could be also an ancient trace even before of the Hispanic and Inca periods. In 1577-80 a strong earthquake ruined the tambo and the road was transferred, and another tambo was built toward the center of the valley, crossing agricultural lands and existing residences, being almost abandoned both the old road as the original tambo.La persistencia desde 1536 de un Camino Real que pasaba por Quillota, y al cual se asocia el tambo, está avalada por diversas pruebas documentales. Repetidamente es denominado el "tambo viejo”. Es probable que su ubicación haya sido ya tradicional en 1561 y que la edificación levantada por los hispanos, sólo haya seguido ocupando el mismo espacio que poseía ese tambo desde los tiempos incaicos. Es probable que el sector, haya estado densamente poblado por los indígenas de Quillota, que también pudiera ser un rasgo antiguo prehispano e incluso pre incaico. Hacia 1577-80, un fuerte movimiento sísmico arruinó el tambo, por lo que se trasladó el trazado del camino y se construyó otro tambo más hacia el centro del valle, cruzando por las tierras agrícolas y de las estancias existentes, quedando semi abandonados el antiguo camino y el primitivo tambo.
