The proposed article studies the conceptual foundations of cooperativism in the urban socialist transition, considering the contributions of different authors and the experience of this form of organization of production. In it, the situation of agricultural and non-agricultural cooperatives is analyzed, to be able to define a group of positive and negative experiences that favor the development of the territory of Cienfuegos. As an essential result, the potentialities, and restrictions of cooperativism in this locality are identified. The investigation contributed to the conception and implementation of government strategies and policies related to local development; with the aim of increasing food production as a priority element of the national economy, promoting new employment routes and raising the quality of life of the population. This issue responds the Food Sovereignty Program (SAN) in Cuba, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals for Latin America as a region, among other relevant documents.Este artículo estudia los fundamentos conceptuales del cooperativismo en la transición socialista cubana, tomando en cuenta las contribuciones de diferentes autores y la experiencia de esta forma de organización de la producción. Además, se analiza la situación de las cooperativas agropecuarias y no agropecuarias para, de esta forma, lograr delimitar un grupo de experiencias positivas y negativas que favorezcan al desarrollo del territorio de Cienfuegos. Como resultado esencial, se identifican las potencialidades y restricciones del cooperativismo en esta localidad. La investigación contribuye a la concepción e implementación de estrategias y políticas de gobierno vinculadas al desarrollo local, con el objetivo de incrementar la producción de alimentos como el elemento prioritario de la economía nacional, promover nuevas vías de empleo y elevar la calidad de vida de la población. Esta temática responde al Programa de Soberanía Alimentaria en Cuba, a la Agenda 2030 y a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible para América Latina como región, entre otros documentos relevantes.
