San Juan de la Frontera was the second city founded in the 16th century in the Cuyo region, under the jurisdiction of the General Captaincy of Chile. According to some chronicles, it was devastated by a flood of the San Juan River and moved to the south. In recent decades, some researchers discussed this version due to the absence of documents that would allow it to be verified, so at present uncertainty remains about this case. To solve the problem, we evaluate the different proposals on the subject, present novel documentary evidence from the General Archive of the Indies and the Historical Archive of San Juan, and discuss the information from some 19th century San Juan plans.Keywords: Foundation, General Captaincy of Chile, Cuyo, San Juan, sixteenth centurySan Juan de la Frontera fue la segunda ciudad fundada en el siglo XVI en la región de Cuyo, bajo jurisdicción de la Capitanía General de Chile. Si bien algunas crónicas mencionaban su arrasamiento por una crecida del río homónimo y su traslado hacia el sur, esa versión fue discutida en las últimas décadas debido a la ausencia de documentos que permitieran comprobarla.
