The chilean population has had an important varÍLItionduring the 1940-1952. By this time the urban population becomes predominant. and in 1982 is higher than 82%. It is of great importance to understand the variation that  ocurred between the census 1970 and 1982 in the different urban categories: cities. towns. and villages, in the national and regionallevels. This information is relevant to establish the behaviour of the population in the number of settlements and the volume of people that live in them.lA población urbana de Chile ha tenido una variación de importancÍa a partir del período intercensaI1940-1952. momento en que pasa a predominar por sobre la rural, llegando a superar el 82% en 1982. Estos antecedentes son relevantespara establecerel comportamientopoblacional en cuanto al número de entidades como también el volumen de habitantes que ellas concentran.
