Excavations carried out in an open area in the Memorial de la Bandera site in the center of the city of Mendoza (west-central Argentina) made it possible to discover, at a depth of four meters, evidence of human settlement. The diverse structures and materials found were analyzed to understand the characteristics of the occupations, their chronology, the lithic and ceramic technology, and the remains of botanical and archaeofaunal items consumed. The results obtained indicate that this occupation was developed between ca. 2100 and 1200 BP, and is one of the earliest sites and ceramic shreds found in the foothills of northern Mendoza province. The stability of the settlement and the possibility that plants were cultivated on the site are inferred by the semi-subterranean houses, combustion features, structures probably associated with water management and macro- and micro-remains of plants. Its location next to the Zanjón Frías alluvial channel and the archeofaunal and anthracological remains permit the interpretation of the existence of wetlands in the past. The lithic technology, together with all the evidences mentioned, lead to the proposal that these occupations occurred within the framework of the economic intensification process postulated for the region and the southern cone of South America. Las excavaciones en el sitio Memorial de la Bandera ubicado en la ciudad de Mendoza, faja central del Centro Oeste Argentino, permitieron recuperar evidencias del asentamiento humano en el piedemonte normendocino. Este sector contaba con escasas referencias arqueológicas debido al amplio desarrollo urbano. En este trabajo se analizan rasgos y materiales, con el objetivo de conocer las características de las ocupaciones y subsistencia en el piedemonte, su cronología y el desarrollo de la tecnología lítica y cerámica. Los fechados indican que el sitio fue ocupado entre ca. 2100 y 1200 años AP y es uno de los más tempranos registrados en el área. Se plantea la estabilidad del asentamiento y el posible cultivo, a partir de la evidencia de casas semisubterráneas, los rasgos de combustión y los restos vegetales. La temprana ocupación de este ambiente se relacionaría con la incorporación de la tecnología cerámica en la región. Su ubicación al costado de un cauce aluvional y la particularidad de los restos arqueofaunísticos y antracológicos, indican la posible existencia de humedales en el pasado. La tecnología lítica y los restos arqueofaunísticos, permiten discutir estas ocupaciones en el marco del proceso de intensificación económica postulado para la región y el Cono Sur.
