| dc.description | The balance between the economic agents of Huancavelica was going through a delicate situation at the beginning of 1660. To help the quicksilver miners, the viceroy count of Santisteban sent them a large subsidy of 232,000 pesos, but the person in charge of its management, the corregidor, Tomás Berjón de Caviedes, did not know how to distribute it as expected. The money was lost in an intricate maze of miners, merchants and Crown employees and it took almost two decades to figure out what had happened. Meanwhile, the investigations launched were convoluted to the point of exonerating those responsible. In the following pages you will be able to read how this relief was embezzled, how the financial operations were concealed and how the investigations and judgments of the Consejo de Indias could barely compensate the damage that said loss caused to the economy of Huancavelica. | en-US |

Para ayudar a los mineros del azogue el virrey conde de Santisteban les remitió un cuantioso socorro de 232.000 pesos, pero el encargado de su gestión, el corregidor Tomás Berjón de Caviedes, no supo distribuirlo como se esperaba. El dinero se perdió en un intrincado laberinto de mineros, comerciantes y empleados de la Corona y se tardó casi dos décadas en dilucidarse qué había ocurrido. Mientras tanto, las investigaciones lanzadas fueron enrevesándose hasta casi exculpar a los responsables.
