Through the theme and concept of economic and social formation, this article studies the evolution during the 19th century of an important coastal territory of central Chile, relatively abandoned by historiography: the port of San Antonio and its immediate territory. The current relevance of this port with respect to the economy of the entire country has quite recent origins, and it is only from the first years of the 20th century, in a slow process, that this territory begins to develop strongly, acquiring its preponderance current. However, this development is determined by a previous period, an export boom based on cereal production, which characterized the transformation of this territory and its ports during the second half of the nineteenth century, especially in the last third of that century. century.The formation and slow transformation of this territory will be reconstructed from the analysis in two senses. At first, from a general observation point, through the reconstruction of the evolution of the property structure, in the territory that surrounded the modest port complex, through the analysis of census and agricultural data. Secondly, we will go into the information that gives an account of the export boom, which energized all this territory around 1870, especially considering the development of the "New Port" in connection with the establishment of a modern commercial society, which brought together important merchants and landowners.A través de la temática y concepto de formación económica y social, el presente artículo estudia el devenir durante el siglo XIX de un importante territorio costero del Chile central, relativamente abandonado por la historiografía: el puerto de San Antonio y su territorio inmediato. La relevancia actual de este puerto con respecto a la economía de todo el país tiene orígenes bastante recientes, y es solo a partir de los primeros años del siglo XX, en un proceso lento, que comienza a desarrollarse dicho territorio con fuerza, adquiriendo su preponderancia actual. Sin embargo, dicho desarrollo está determinado por un período previo, un auge exportador basado en la producción de cereales, que caracterizó la transformación de este territorio y sus “puertos” durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, en especial en el último tercio de dicha centuria. La formación y lenta transformación de este territorio la reconstruiremos a partir del análisis en dos sentidos. En un primer momento, desde un punto de observación general, a través de la reconstrucción de la evolución de la estructura de la propiedad, en el territorio que rodeaba al modesto complejo portuario, por medio del análisis de datos censales y agrícolas. En segundo lugar, nos adentraremos en las informaciones que dan cuenta del boom exportador, que dinamiza todo este territorio hacia 1870, especialmente considerando el desarrollo del “Puerto Nuevo” a propósito del establecimiento de una moderna sociedad comercial, que agrupaba a importantes comerciantes y terratenientes chilenos de la época.
