In this paper the author presents a complete description of the constitutional evolution of the right to social security. He reviews the different positions that the constitutional system has given to this right and the rol eit has given to the State and the individuals in its promotion, fi nancing, and control. He concludes hi sanalysis with the current state of the right to social security, Constitution of 1980, the subsidiary role that was assigned to the State, and the recent Pension Reform (Law number 20255)which introduced a greater space of solidarity to the individual capitalization system.En este trabajo el autor presenta una completa descripción de la evolución constitucional del derecho a la seguridad social. Repasa las distintas posturas que el ordenamiento constitucional ha dado a este derecho y el papel que ha otorgado al Estado y a los privados en su promoción, financiamiento, control. Culmina su análisis con el estado actual del derecho a la seguridad social, en la Constitución de 1980, el rol subsidiario que se asignó al Estado, y la reciente Reforma Previsional (Ley 20.255) que introdujo un mayor espacio de solidaridad al sistema de capitalización individual.
