This article presents a brief situation regarding the typographic field in Latin America. It extensively deals with the definition of typography by examining subjects such as heritage, identity, technology, education, investigation and design practices, following a regional perspective, taking into account that this field has been historically defined under a Eurocentric vision, and that today´s incipient development of the aforementioned issues could contribute to the construction of a geopolitical and socially responsible positioning, leading to a hypothetical decolonization. In order to visualize this concept, the pen of a number of Latin American thinkers was used, and it was connected to theoretical perspectives of different referents on the subject matter, using their own experiences and others close by.Este artículo acerca un breve estado de situación sobre la actividad de la disciplina tipográfica en América Latina. En su desarrollo trata con amplitud la definición de tipografía, revisando tópicos como patrimonio, identidad, tecnología, educación, investigación y prácticas de Diseño, con una perspectiva regional, entendiendo que el rubro fue históricamente marcado por una marcada visión eurocéntrica, y que el actual e incipiente desarrollo de los puntos mencionados, podría contribuir a la construcción de una postura geopolítica y socialmente responsable respecto de la disciplina, camino hacia a una hipotética descolonización. Para visualizar este concepto se recurrió a la pluma de una serie de pensadores latinoamericanos y se la vinculó con las miradas teóricas de distintos referentes de la temática, con experiencias propias1 y otras cercanas.
