From a text by the historian Joaquin Fernandois about the function of travel writing, this essay proposes a new reading of the essays of Gabriela Mistral and Luis Oyarzún. In both these authors, traveling is considered, on one hand, as allegory that enables them to organize their discourse and, on the other, as ‘experience' beyond the merely rhetorical.It is in this direction that certain ideas are discussed concerning the form adopted by present day travel writers, in the light of Fernandois' hypothesis.El presente trabajo propone, a partir de un texto del historiador Joaquín Fermandois acerca del fin del viaje, una lectura de la obra ensayística de Luis Oyarzún y Gabriela Mistral centrada en este tema. Se considera el viaje en estos dos autores, por una parte, en cuanto alegoría que articula su discurso y, por otra parte, en tanto que experiencia, irreductible a la retórica. Es en esta dirección que se proponen ciertas ideas acerca de la forma actual que adopta el viaje, discutiendo con la hipótesis de Fermandois.
