Following Europe and the Americas, Africa was the third continent to implement a system of human rights protection. The system was founded on a series of legal instruments based on the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights. A group of political and quasi-judicial institutions is responsible for the promotion of a human rights culture and its supervision. In addition, a court has been recently created to deliver judgments of a binding nature for the States, in cases where they do not fulfill existing obligations. This paper presents a general overview of the legal instruments and bodies that make up the human rights system in Africa, and provides examples and data that allow for an assessment of the system.Después de Europa y América, África es el tercer continente en implementar un sistema de protección de los derechos humanos. Este último está fundado en una serie de instrumentos jurídicos que tienen como base la Carta africana sobre los derechos humanos y de los pueblos. Asimismo, un grupo de instituciones políticas y cuasi jurisdiccionales son las encargadas de fomentar la cultura de los derechos humanos y fiscalizar su respeto y, recientemente, es un tribunal el que tiene como misión emitir sentencias de carácter vinculante para los Estados cuando éstos no cumplan con los compromisos adquiridos. El presente trabajo otorga un panorama general de estos instrumentos y órganos que conforman el sistema de derechos humanos en África, a través de ejemplos y datos que permiten plantear una valoración del sistema.
