In this article, it is sustained that the expansion cycle of the Chile saltpeter ceased with the crisis that began in 1920. In imaginary of people, it is the crisis of the 30's the one that ended the great expansion of the saltpeter in Chile. The author gives information about economic and social themes, in order to demonstrate his conjecture, standing out the information obtained from the files at the Intendencia de Tarapacá and the interviews with pampinos who were part of the Chile saltpeter crisis. He analyzes the social problem that lead to the de cay of the expansion cycle of saltpeter, specially to Chilean and Bolivian unemployed workers.En este artículo se sostiene que el ciclo de expansión del salitre concluye con la crisis que se inaugura en 1920. En el imaginario popular es la crisis de los años treinta la que terminó con la gran expansión del salitre en Chile. El autor entrega datos de índole económico y social para demostrar su conjetura, destacándose la información proveniente del archivo de la Intendencia de Tarapacá y entrevistas a pampinos protagonistas de la crisis salitrera. Analiza el problema social que significó la decadencia del ciclo de expansión del salitre, especialmente para los obreros cesantes chilenos y bolivianos
