| dc.description | In this article, it is sustained that the expansion cycle of the Chile saltpeter ceased with the crisis that began in 1920. In imaginary of people, it is the crisis of the 30's the one that ended the great expansion of the saltpeter in Chile. The author gives information about economic and social themes, in order to demonstrate his conjecture, standing out the information obtained from the files at the Intendencia de Tarapacá and the interviews with pampinos who were part of the Chile saltpeter crisis. En el imaginario popular es la crisis de los años treinta la que terminó con la gran expansión del salitre en Chile.
