dc.descriptionThe outstanding diversity of birdlife recorded for Ecuador is key to the developmentof a sustainable ornithological tourism that can support local communitiesand be environmentally friendly. Globally, birdwatching is an important branchof ecotourism known to benefit local communities within a framework of sustainability.Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the past and presentof the ornithology as well as birdwatching tourism in Ecuador, with the prospectiveview to protect the habitat of birds and to empower local communities via asustainable birdwatching tourism. The text includes (i) a detailed description offour principal birdwatching geographic routes which allows visitors from aroundthe world to observe endemic, migrant and rare birds in different ecosystems ofthe Pacific coastal lowlands and islands, the Amazonian region, and the Andeanhighlands and (ii) an upgrading of 2017 reports describing new bird sightings inEcuador. The term bird-trekking is proposed for the modality of half day to onedaybirdwatching walks along river beds, waterfalls and streams close to citieswithout professional guides or sophisticated equipment other than a GPS and adigital map.en-US
dc.descriptionLa mega biodiversidad de aves en Ecuador ha sido el factor clave para el desarrollo del aviturismo, considerado la modalidad más sustentable del ecoturismo, la menos invasiva a la cultura de las comunidades y la menos agresiva contra la naturaleza. El aviturismo sustentable constituye una importante rama del ecoturismo internacional con beneficios socio-económicos para el país. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este trabajo es presentar una revisión del pasado y del presente del aviturismo en Ecuador con una visión prospectiva hacia el desarrollo de un sistema nacional de aviturismo sustentable cuyo fin sea conservar los hábitats de las aves y empoderar a las comunidades que habitan en zonas protegidas. El texto incluye: (i) la descripción de cuatro rutas geográficas principales que permiten a los avevistores de todo el mundo admirar de cerca la avifauna migratoria y endémica en ecosistemas que van desde la costa e islas del Océano Pacifico y la Amazonia hasta las cumbres de la Cordillera de Los Andes, y (ii) la actualización de nuevos avistamientos de aves en el periodo 2017-2020. Se propone el término de avisenderismo para la modalidad de observar la gran biodiversidad de aves en senderos que circundan cursos de ríos, quebradas y riachuelos cercanos a ciudades durante medio o un día completo sin necesidad de equipamientos sofisticados o guías profesionales, solo con el uso de un GPS y un mapa digital.es-ES
