In 1685, recently arrived to his diocese, Bishop Núñez de la Vega confronted a complex case brought against a group of “hechiceros, brujos, nagualistas y supersticiosos” from the Zoque town of Jiquipilas. In this article, I examine the interrogation of the only woman implicated, the Indian María Sánchez, daughter of the best known sorcerer of the region. Forming part of the more extensive judicial record, the three pages analyzed here uncover a dialogue rarely found in relationships between an inquisitor and an accused and suggest important methodological reflections about an issue with great heuristic potential: the intimate bond that unites inquisition and confession, and its specificities in the American Church. The text also offers questions for future research on the pastoral attitude and the doctrinal position of Núñez in regard to the coexistence of an unknown element –the nagual– and the familiar figure of the devil, that the inquiries in the process revealed.En 1685, recién llegado a su diócesis, el obispo Núñez de la Vega se encontró con un complejo caso contra un grupo de “hechiceros, brujos, nagualistas y supersticiosos” del pueblo zoque de Jiquipilas. En el presente articulo examino el interrogatorio de la única mujer implicada en el caso, la india María Sánchez, hija del brujo más conocido de la región. Insertadas en el más amplio proceso judicial, las tres hojas bajo examen descubren un diálogo algo insólito en las relaciones entre el inquisidor y el inquirido, y sugieren importantes reflexiones metodológicas acerca de un tema de gran potencial heurístico, es decir, el íntimo lazo que ata inquisición y confesión, y sus específicas declinaciones en la Iglesia americana. El texto también pone algunas preguntas para futuras investigaciones acerca de la actitud pastoral y la posición doctrinaria de Núñez hacia la coexistencia di un elemento desconocido –el nagual– con la familiar figura del Diablo, que las pesquisas del proceso revelaron.
