| dc.description | During the twentieth century, the world faced a process of industrialization, coupled with population growth, that produced an unprecedented and exorbitant worldwide energy omnivorism. This led to the need, over the past few decades, to find an alternative development model that would overturn capitalism’s economistic discourse and present a new model based on long-term economic growth combined with future well-being and prosperity. This is how the theory of post-development and the Sustainable Development model laid-out by the United Nations emerged. This article describes the case of Costa Rica based on the perspective of sustainable development, analyzing 6 indicators that shed light on sustainable development in that country: Happiness and Wellbeing, Social Progress, Environmental Performance, Competitiveness, Human Development and Democracy. It concludes that Costa Rica has laid the foundations for sustainable development, but although it has built-up its institutional dimension, there is still a long way to ensure the fundamental rights of all Costa Ricans. | en-US |
| dc.description | Durante todo el siglo XX el proceso de industrialización junto con el crecimiento demográfico dio pie a un exorbitante omnivorismo energético sin precedentes a escala mundial. Es por esto que en estas últimas décadas surge la necesidad de buscar un modelo alternativo de desarrollo que diera un vuelco al discurso economicista propio del capitalismo y planteara un nuevo modelo basado en un crecimiento económico a largo plazo combinado con el bienestar y la prosperidad futura. Así nace la corriente del postdesarrollo y el modelo de Desarrollo sostenible planteado por las Naciones Unidas. En este artículo se profundiza el caso de Costa Rica sobre la base de la perspectiva del Desarrollo sostenible. Para ello se analizan 6 índices que dan luces sobre el Desarrollo sostenible en Costa Rica: Felicidad y Bienestar, Progreso social, Desempeño Ambiental, Competitividad, Desarrollo Humano y Democracia. Se concluye que Costa Rica ha sentado las bases de un Desarrollo sostenible, pero si bien se ha forjado en su dimensión institucional, aún queda un largo camino para poder asegurar los derechos fundamentales de todos los costarricenses. | es-ES |
