This paper aims at 1) criticizing the self-sufficiency of human language taken as a conventional system of signs and showingits vital roots; 2) exploring the “infrastructure” that supports the conventional human language. The first point focuses on the ideas of George Hebert Mead and Jürgen Habermas, who affirm that conventional language arises from a natural context. It is argued that both authors assume an unjustified breach between natural and conventional communication which leads them tothe presupposition that human conventional communication is self-sufficient. The second point discusses the proposal of Michael Tomassello, who bases linguistic meaning on a pre-linguistic structure shared to a large extent with our primate relatives.El propósito de este trabajo es doble: 1) criticar la auto-suficiencia del lenguaje humano entendido como sistema convencional de signos, mostrando paralelamente su raigambre vital; 2) explorar la “infra-estructura” sobre la que se apoya el lenguaje humano convencional. Para el primer punto, se presenta y discute las posiciones de George Herbert Mead y de Jürgen Habermas, quienes pretenden dar cuenta de la conformación del lenguaje convencional a partir de una instancia previa. Se sostiene que estos autores suponen una brecha no suficientemente justificada entre la comunicación natural y la convencional, asumiendo así la auto-suficiencia de la convencionalidad humana. Se aborda entonces la propuesta de Tomasello, quien enraíza la significatividad del lenguaje en una estructura pre-lingüística compartida en gran medida con nuestros parientes primates.
