The development of new technologies for storage, distribution, and reproduction of music, as well as the easy access to them is –definitely- generating different types of relationships with what we call sound art. This situation has brought at least two important and transcendent consequences. First, it is the elimination of all boundaries or diffi culties to find, acquire, and archive different types and styles of music from all over the world. Second, it is the fact that the spaces used for music consumption have changed. The latter has installed a self-absorbed listener and it seems to be breaking the social character that –traditionally- had the listening session. One area of knowledge or training that should address this issue is the Music Education -if we understand it as a problem. We may wonder if, from this specialty, we are able to assume such a complex task. To address this issue we have started by doing the analysis of the current educational model in the field of Music Education. Its origins, motivations, and discourses that gave meaning to it. Then, we have tried to establish a rupture with the old model. This rupture is based on the reasons described above, as well as on the different changes that our society has experienced in recent times.El desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías para el almacenamiento, distribución y reproducción de músicas, así como el fácil acceso a ellas, defi nitivamente está generando distintos tipos de relación con aquello que llamamos arte sonoro. Esta situación ha traído de la mano por lo menos dos hechos trascendentes: por un lado, la eliminación de todo tipo de fronteras o dificultades para conocer, adquirir y archivar diferentes tipos y estilos de músicas creadas en cualquier punto del mundo; y por otro, el que da cuenta  de la modifi cación de los espacios de uso y consumo de músicas. Esto último, pues se ha  instalado una escucha ensimismada que, pareciera, está rompiendo el carácter social que tradicionalmente tenía la audición musical.Una de las áreas del conocimiento o de la formación que debiera abordar esta problemática es la Educación Musical –si es que lo entendemos como problema—. Pero bien cabe preguntarse, si desde esta especialidad se está en condiciones de asumir tan compleja tarea.Para abordar este tema se ha partido del análisis del modelo educativo vigente en el ámbito de la educación musical: de sus orígenes, motivaciones y discursos que le dieron sentido. Luego se ha intentado establecer una ruptura con el modelo; tanto por lo antes descrito, como también por los distintos cambios que ha vivido nuestra sociedad en el último tiempo.
