The present work, originating from a research project on History and Culture ofFood in Antiquities, seeks to problematize an important aspect of food in the ancientGreek world: the question of the sources of investigation and their possibilities. Whatmaterial does the historian have at his disposal to investigate in the Greek world howheroes, rulers, soldiers, rich and poor people, men and women were fed? Is it possibleto access the different social segments of the Greek world and find out what food,banquets and the relationship between food and certain rites were like? We observe,from these questions and others, the existence of limits of investigative possibilitiesthat, nevertheless, do not prevent us to know a little about the table of this distantpast. For this, we will follow the following path: first, we will observe some generalaspects of Greek food, to observe thematic possibilities dispersed in the writtentradition; in continuity, aspects related to material culture, from which elements ofGreek food culture are found; finally, we will reflect on a sui generis source on foodamong the ancient Greeks that we have available: the poetry of Archestratus, whichis largely dedicated to talking about the kitchen from products, culinary methods,utensils, furniture and agents of production that are probably linked to the culture ofa Greek elite with more resources for a more elaborate diet.El presente trabajo, oriundo de un proyecto de investigación sobre Historia yCultura de la Alimentación en las Antigüedades, busca problematizar un importanteaspecto de la alimentación del mundo griego antiguo: la cuestión de las fuentes deinvestigación y sus posibilidades. ¿Qué material tiene el historiador a su disposiciónpara investigar en el mundo griego antiguo la forma cómo se alimentaban héroes,gobernantes, soldados, personas ricas y pobres, hombres y mujeres? ¿Es posibleacceder a los diversos segmentos sociales del mundo griego y saber sobre sus hábitosalimentarios? ¿Es posible comprender de hecho cómo se daban las comidas, losbanquetes y la relación entre el alimento y ciertos ritos? Observamos, a partir deestas cuestiones y otras, la existencia de límites de posibilidades investigativas que,no obstante, no nos impiden conocer un poco sobre la mesa de ese pasado tan lejano.Para ello seguiremos el siguiente camino: observaremos, primero, algunos aspectosgenerales de la alimentación griega, para observar posibilidades temáticas dispersasen la tradición escrita; a continuación, se abordarán aspectos referentes a la culturamaterial, de donde se incautan elementos de la cultura alimentaria griega; finalmentereflexionamos sobre una fuente sui generis sobre la alimentación entre los griegosantiguos a los que tenemos disponible: la poesía de Arquéstrato, que en gran parteestá dedicada a hablar sobre la cocina a partir de productos, métodos culinarios,utensilios, mobiliario y agentes de producción que se ligan probablemente a lacultura de una elite griega con más recursos para una alimentación más elaborada.
