The present work explores the different meanings that the heterogeneous press produced, transmitted and put into circulation when narrating the death, burial and posthumous biography of the famous Argentine boxer Justo Suárez (1909-1939). Based on works on the social and cultural history of sport and death, the funeral is analyzed as a polyphonic ritual in which different social actors contributed to construct a new figure never seen before in modern Argentina: the ‘first’ popular argentine sports idol. The hypothesis suggests that the death of Justo Suárez and his particular biography consolidated and, at the same time, amplified the fictional construction of the ‘first’ popular argentine sports idol, being the press a key actor in this process.El presente trabajo explora los diferentes sentidos que la heterogénea prensa produjo, transmitió y puso en circulación a la hora de narrar la muerte, el sepelio y la biografía póstuma del famoso boxeador argentino Justo Suárez (1909-1938). A partir de trabajos sobre historia social y cultural del deporte y la muerte, se analiza el funeral como un ritual polifónico en el que diferentes actores sociales contribuyeron a construir una nueva figura nunca antes vista en la Argentina moderna: la del ‘primer’ ídolo popular deportivo argentino. La hipótesis sugiere pensar que la muerte de Justo Suárez y su particular biografía consolidaron y, a la vez, amplificaron la construcción ficcional del ‘primer’ ídolo popular deportivo argentino, siendo la prensa un actor clave en este proceso.
