| dc.description | The availability of central nervous system (CNS) stimulants in ilicit markets has increased the possibility of drug abuse, either in social events, recreative sport practice or competitive sports. The major types of CNS stimulants currently abused in sports are amphetamines, cocaine, anorectic drugs, caffeine and ephedrine. These drugs confer a significative advantage margin in high intensity anaerobic exercise ad may postpone the onset of fatigue in long duration exercises. On the other hand, there is well documented information relating CNS stimulant abuse with cardiovascular damage and sudden death in sports. These findings emphasize the need to educate the general population, as well as leisure-time and competitive elite athletes about the dangers associated to CNS stimulant abuse. | en-US |
| dc.description | La disponibilidad de estimulantes del sistema nervioso central (SNC) en el mercado ilícito ha incrementado la posibilidad de uso de estas substancias en eventos sociales, en la práctica deportiva recreativa y también en el deporte competitivo. Los estimulantes más usados en el deporte son anfetaminas, cocaina, anorexígenos, cafeína y efedrina. Estos fármacos confieren un margen de ventaja significativo en pruebas anaeróbicas de alta intensidad y pueden postponer la aparición de fatiga en pruebas de larga duración. Por otra parte, existe información bien documentada que relaciona el abuso de estimulantes con daño cardiovascular y muerte súbita en la práctica deportiva. Estos antecedentes enfatizan la necesidad de educar a la población general y especialmente a deportistas aficionados y de elite, sobre los peligros asociados al abuso de estimulantes del SNC. | es-ES |
