This article presents the results of the archaeological characterization of Punta Patache in Chile’s Tarapaca region, which is composed of 18 shell middens and a cemetery. It discusses the changes the maritime fisher-hunter-gatherer groups sustained and the population dynamics between the Middle Archaic period and late prehistory (7470 and 670 cal BP). This occupational sequence begins with the residential camps associated with shell fishhooks in the Middle Archaic period, followed by a significant gap of ca. 1800 years. During the Late Archaic and Early Formative periods, the number of campsites showing persistent and intermittent occupation increased. As the occupation of the Rheic coast consolidated and intensified in the Late Formative and Late Intermediate periods, the number of population centers increased.La evaluación arqueológica intensiva de Punta Patache revela una notable secuencia ocupacional compuesta por 20 sitios arqueológicos (basurales conchíferos, campamentos y cementerio). El registro arqueológico sintetiza gran parte de la secuencia cultural de la costa arreica de Tarapacá, documentándose 7000 años de ocupación (7470-670 Cal AP) mediante una caracterización estratigráfica de ocupaciones domésticas y funeraria Se evalúa el cambio cultural de grupos especializados en la explotación de recursos marinos de forma sostenida e intermitente a partir del Arcaico Medio. Se reconoce un incremento en el número de ocupaciones a partir del Arcaico Tardío que desencadena un cambio en el patrón de asentamientos paralelo al surgimiento de cerámica temprana.
