| dc.description | En este artículo se analizan las relaciones establecidas, a principios del siglo XIX, entre el Estado chileno republicano recién fundado y las comunidades autóctonas que vivían al sur del río Biobío. Más específicamente, se distingue desde los albores del proceso independentista, sobre todo a partir de la década de 1820, un afán por incorporar al proyecto nacional los territorios ubicados al sur de esta frontera, así como también a sus habitantes. Dentro de las estrategias jurídicas y políticas esgrimidas por el poder dirigente para hacer efectiva esta intención, es posible identificar el ofrecimiento temprano de nacionalidad chilena, así como también de una condición particular de ciudadanía, entendida sólo en una lógica de deberes y no derechos políticos. Sin embargo, esta estrategia no pudo ser puesta en práctica, pues la mayor parte de las comunidades autóctonas a las que iba destinada opuso una tenaz resistencia al régimen instaurado, dado que no percibieron las supuestas ventajas del régimen republicano. Asimismo, se sostiene que esta resistencia, mantenida por los naturales durante décadas en el territorio sur de la naciente república, no sólo hizo fracasar dicha estrategia, sino que también fue minando el discurso más ilustrado e incluyente propio de los primeros decenios, el cual fue siendo reemplazado desde mediados de 1830 por uno relativamente excluyente, o mejor dicho, incluyente territorialmente –dado el creciente interés económico que comenzaron a despertar estas tierras en los chilenos–, pero excluyente en relación a sus habitantes. | es-ES |
| dc.description | This article analyzes the relations between Chile’s recently established republican State and the indigenous communities then living south of the Bío Bío River. More specifically, it identifies, since the beginnings of the independence process, but especially after the 1820’s, a will to incorporate into the national project the territories situated south of this frontier, as well as their inhabitants. Among the legal and political strategies displayed by the ruling groups to materialize this purpose, one can identify an early offer of Chilean nationality, as well as a particular form of citizenship defined by duties rather than political rights. However, this strategy could not be implemented because of the stubborn resistance put up by most indigenous communities with respect to the new republican regime, whose alleged benefits for themselves they failed to grasp. It is likewise sustained that the natives’ resistance not only resulted in the failure of that strategy, but also undermined the “enlightened” and inclusive discourse characteristic of the early decades, forcing its replacement, starting in the mid-1830’s, by a more exclusionary one, more interested in territorial wealth than in the indigenous inhabitants. | en-US |
