dc.descriptionABSTRACT: This paper intends to discuss the applicability of the concept of functional differentiation proposed by Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. It argues that the applicability of such a concept for the description of a given empirical or historical context of modern world society depends on the acceptance of a syncretism of the forms of societal differentiation, so that functional differentiation is variably combined with hierarchical, geographical and segmental differentiations. Likewise, such a description needs to incorporate the three basic scales of social systems (alongside functional systems, organizations, and interactions) and the three levels of social structures: macrostructures, composed of the different miscellanies of forms of differentiation; institutions, as slices of the social macrostructure, inner structures of social systems and clusters of expectations supported by the assumed expectations of others in general; and expectations, as social microstructures that, through language and signs, couple psychic and social systems. With these analytical resources, as argued here, it is possible to confer greater acuity to the mobilization of systems theory for empirical and/or historical research.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo pretende discutir la aplicabilidad del concepto de diferenciación funcional propuesto por la teoría de los sistemas sociales de Niklas Luhmann. Sostiene que la aplicabilidad de dicho concepto para la descripción de un determinado contexto empírico o histórico de la sociedad mundial moderna depende de la aceptación de un sincretismo de formas de diferenciación social, de modo que la diferenciación funcional se combine de forma variable con diferenciaciones jerárquicas, geográficas y segmentarias. Del mismo modo, tal descripción necesita incorporar las tres escalas básicas de los sistemas sociales (junto a los sistemas funcionales, las organizaciones y las interacciones) y los tres niveles de las estructuras sociales: las macroestructuras, compuestas por las distintas misceláneas de formas de diferenciación; las instituciones, como rebanadas de la macroestructura social, estructuras internas de los sistemas sociales y aglomeraciones de expectativas sustentadas en las expectativas asumidas de terceros en general; y las expectativas, como microestructuras sociales que, a través del lenguaje y los signos, vinculan los sistemas psíquicos y sociales. Con estos recursos analíticos, se argumenta, es posible conferir mayor agudeza a la movilización de la teoría de sistemas para la investigación empírica y/o histórica.es-ES
