| dc.description | The life of the Church in Chile during much of the twentieth century is marked by a clear social trend within Chilean Catholicism. An awareness that will deepen within the Chilean Bishops after the separation of church and state in 1925. This event that will be of great significance in the history of the Church since it created the possibility of a new structure and organization. On one hand, and after an arduous discussion settled by the Holy See, the Conservative Party was stripped of its political weight exercised within the Church since it way the only catholic party. Secondly, the Church gradually sought a definition of herself understanding her mission as service. The rediscovery of this missionary dimension emphasized a Christian humanism that un-derlies the dignity of all men.With the publication of a set of social writings, the Chilean Episcopate diagnosed a precarious social situation framed within a complex international context. With Vati-can II, the Chilean hierarchy sought to promote a thorough reform and renewal of so-ciety taking a clear position on the problems that afflicted it. | dc.description | La comprensión de la vida de la Iglesia en Chile durante gran parte del siglo XX se en-tiende por una clara tendencia a lo social al interior del catolicismo chileno. Una toma de conciencia que se profundizará en el Episcopado nacional después de la separación de la Iglesia y del Estado en 1925. Acontecimiento que será de gran significación en la historia de la Iglesia al dar la posibilidad de una nueva estructuración y organización de ésta. Por una parte, y después de una ardua discusión zanjada por la Santa Sede, se privó al Partido Conservador del peso político que ejercía al interior de la Iglesia al ser el único partido de los católicos. Y en segundo lugar, la Iglesia buscará progresi-vamente una definición de su ser a partir de su misión entendida cada vez más como un servicio. Al profundizar esta dimensión misionera se insistirá en un humanismo cristiano que subraya la dignidad de todos hombres. Con la publicación de un conjunto de escritos sociales, el Episcopado chileno diag-nosticará una precaria situación social enmarcada dentro de un contexto internacio-nal muy complejo. Con el Concilio Vaticano II, la jerarquía chilena buscará impulsar una profunda reforma y renovación de la sociedad al tomar una posición clara frente a los problemas sociales que la aquejan. La reforma agraria de 1962 se enmarca entre una de las iniciativas del Episcopado. | es-ES |
