dc.descriptionIn Latin America, recent processes of democratic backsliding have tested the robustness of the Inter-American democratic system (IADS). Based on theoretical frameworks of democ­racy promotion, hypotheses stemming from institutionalist and normative theories suffer from important limitations in explaining the liberal democracies’ motivations to act in the face of anti-democratic threats. Analyzing the cases of democratic regression in Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and the consequent responses from the Caribbean Community’s (Caricom) liberal democracies vis-à-vis these autocracies, this article cor­roborates that democracy promotion responds to a materialistic-utilitarian hypothesis that prioritizes material cost-benefit calculations over democratic norms and institutions. The analysis reveals that the worrying but real prevalence of power politics over democratic principles challenges the solidity of the IADS.en-US
dc.descriptionEn Latinoamérica, los recientes procesos de retroceso democrático han puesto a prueba la solidez del Sistema Democrático Interamericano (SDI). Partiendo de los marcos teóricos de promoción democrática, las hipótesis de las teorías institucio­nalistas y normativas sufren de importantes limitaciones en explicar los factores que motivan a las democracias liberales a promover la democracia frente a amena­zas anti-democráticas. Analizando los casos de retroceso democrático en Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua y Venezuela y las consecuentes posiciones de las democra­cias liberales de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom), se comprueba que la promo­ción democrática es más consistente con la hipótesis materialista-utilitaria de pro­moción democrática, la cual prioriza los cálculos costos-beneficios materiales por sobre normas e instituciones democráticas. Se concluye que la preocupante pero real prevalencia de intereses políticos y materiales sobre principios democráticos reta y debilita la solidez del SDI.es-ES
