This article —based on the premise that a film adaptation is the result of the reading, interpreting and understanding of a literary text— is a study of the relationship between the short story entitled ¿Qué me quieres amor?, by Spanish writer Manuel Rivas, and the film, La lengua de las mariposas, directed by José Luis Cuerda. Thus, the integration of three short stories by Rivas, the quotations, the references and the clarifications introduced in the movie by José Luis Cuerda, and the script writer, Rafael Azcona, into one reading, present a dialogue —compared by Manuel Rivas with a transmigration— which speaks of a certain way of interpreting Spain´s recent history.A partir de una idea de la adaptación cinematográfica como resultado de un trabajo de lectura, interpretación y comprensión de un texto literario, el presente artículo estudia la relación que se establece entre el libro de cuentos ¿Qué me quieres, amor?, del escritor español Manuel Rivas, y la película titulada La lengua de las mariposas, dirigida por José Luis Cuerda. La integración, en una sola lectura, de tres cuentos del libro de Rivas, así como las citas, referencias y aclaraciones introducidas en la película por José Luis Cuerda y por el guionista Rafael Azcona, dan cuenta de un diálogo que Manuel Rivas ha comparado con una transmigración, y que nos habla de cierta manera de interpretar la historia reciente de España.
