dc.descriptionStarting from our fieldwork among the Tsotsil of Chenalhó, a municipality located in the Chiapas Highlands, we explore the possibility of rethinking the violence of contemporary Mexico through the concept of the “Modern Sovereign”, introduced by the African anthropologist and sociologist Joseph Tonda to delimit the multiform but unified power that currently articulates the social in Gabon and the two Congos. By re-examining in detail the case of an irreligious woman with convulsions, we sound out the level of interweaving of four apparently disconnected fetishisms —“native”, capitalist, Freudian, and political—, a phenomenon that characterizes the singular violence propagated in the realm of the Modern Sovereign. At the same time, we evaluate Tonda’s proposal, as well as our attempt to build bridges between at first sight radically disjointed contexts. More generally, we hope to provide a sound basis for embarking on a long-term dialogue with this heterodox thinker, whose ideas allow to put the spotlight on the limitations of the traditional theoretical-methodological frameworks when approaching present-day Latin American reality, more than ever marked by the brutality of colonization and its postcolonial mutations.en-US
dc.descriptionA partir de nuestro trabajo de campo entre los tsostiles de Chenalhó, un municipio que se encuentra en los Altos de Chiapas, exploramos la posibilidad de repensar la violencia del México contemporáneo por medio del concepto del “Soberano moderno”, introducido por el antropólogo y sociólogo africano Joseph Tonda para delimitar el poder multiforme pero unificado que actualmente articula lo social en Gabón y los dos Congos. Al reexaminar de cerca el caso de una mujer irreligiosa con convulsiones, sondeamos el grado de imbricación de cuatro fetichismos aparentemente inconexos —“nativo”, capitalista, freudiano y político—, un fenómeno que caracteriza la violencia singular propagada en el ámbito del Soberano moderno. Paralelamente, evaluamos tanto la propuesta de Tonda como nuestro intento de establecer puentes entre contextos a primera vista radicalmente dispares. Más en general, esperamos cimentar las bases para entablar un diálogo de largo aliento con este pensador heterodoxo, cuyas ideas permiten poner en el punto de mira las limitaciones de los marcos teórico-metodológicos heredados para aproximarse a la realidad latinoamericana de hoy en día, marcada más que nunca por la brutalidad de la colonización y sus mutaciones poscoloniales.es-ES
