This article discusses, from a legal and judicial perspective, the conflict between the archbishops of Mexico and the Cathedral Chapter, over the place that corresponded to the “vicario general y provisor oficial” in the cathedral choir and other ceremonies, when he did not belong to the body of chapter members itself. A problem of precedence called into question the dignity of the provisor and, consequently, his place in the socio-ecclesiological order of New Spain. The litigation disrupted the relationship between the ecclesiastical authorities, transcended New Spain’s borders, involved the royal authorities on both shores of the Atlantic and was discussed by two of the main treatise writers of the Indies.En el presente artículo revisaremos, desde la perspectiva jurídica y judicial, el conflicto entre los arzobispos de México y el Deán y Cabildo catedralicio, sobre el lugar que por derecho le correspondía al vicario general y provisor oficial en el coro de la catedral y otras ceremonias, cuando éste no pertenecía al cuerpo de capitulares. Un problema de precedencias que ponía en entredicho la dignidad del provisor y, en consecuencia, su lugar en el orden socio-eclesiológico de la Nueva España. El litigio trastocó la relación entre autoridades eclesiástica diocesanas, trascendió las fronteras novohispanas, involucró a las autoridades reales de ambas riberas del Atlántico y fue discutido por dos de los principales tratadistas indianos del siglo XVII.
