In some of Clark Ashton Smith's texts we can find the concept of the American Adam, which is also present in most of American narrative literary works. In general terms, this concept is presented as the portrayal of a unique American hero or protagonist, who must go through a series of trials to achieve his goal. However, this idea has not been developed within what is commonly known as Weird Tales. This article will show that, despite the pessimistic lens upon which the author constructs his work, it is possible to find an adamic and optimistic hero in The Maze of the Enchanter. Along the analysis of this text, together with the definition of what an American Adam is, we will show the correspondence between one and the other. This approach is intended to open new pathways to the analysis of fantasy, horror and science fiction, considering that these themes are mostly rare in this type of literary works.en-US
