This paper analyzes a fragment of the novel The Gentle Land by Elpidio Isla, an author from Santa Cruz province in Argentina. The text shows how the Patagonia environment enables the fictionalized historical character,  Simon De Alcazaba,  to acquire self-knowledge. The reason for the journey as well as his approaching death lead the protagonist to redefine his life and it's underlying values. In that far-off southern land,  where he was unable to implement the schemes that Western Imperial reason had plotted to justify its expansion,  the character not only understands the true meaning of his life,  but it's also able to retell it.En este trabajo se estudia un fragmento de la novela La tierra Leve del autor santacruceño Elpidio Isla. Este texto revela la forma en que el ámbito patagónico le permite al personaje histórico ficcionalizado, Simón de Alcázaba,  descubrir la última verdad:  el conocimiento de sí mismo. El motivo del viaje y la dimensión que da el umbral de la muerte posibilitan al protagonista resignificar su vida en los valores que la  sustentaron. En  la periférica tierra del sur, donde no fue posible concretar los designios que la razón occidental/imperial había trazado para justificar su expansión, el personaje no solo se da cuenta del verdadero sentido de su vida, sino que también puede contarlo.
