This article proposes two fundamental objectives. Firstly, to give an idea about the conception that language teachers of eighth graders have of reading and the cognitive processes involved in this task; in other words, their metacomprensive knowledge. Secondly, to establish if this knowledge influences the concept of reading that their own students have already constructed. Furthermore, the paper investigates the perception a group of teachers on the student’s potential for performing this task. Five teachers ―whose students showed a high level of metacomprensive knowledge according to their age― and five other students ―whose student showed a low level of metacomprensive knowledge― were interviewed. In the analysis of these answers, we establish that the metacomprensive knowledge of the teachers not only influences that of their students but also optimizes the teacher’s perception of the possibility of acquiring reading expertise from his students. Este artículo se propone dos objetivos fundamentales. Por una parte, dar cuenta de la concepción que poseen los profesores de lengua de 8° año básico acerca de la lectura y de los procesos cognitivos involucrados en esta tarea ―es decir su saber metacomprensivo― ,y por otra, establecer si este conocimiento influencia el concepto de lectura que se han forjado sus propios alumno. Además, este documento investiga la percepción que este grupo de profesores posee acerca de las potencialidades que poseen sus alumnos para esta tarea. Para ello, se realizaron entrevistas a cinco profesores cuyos alumnos demostraron un nivel de conocimientos metacomprensivos acorde a su edad y cinco docentes cuyos estudiantes no lograron el mismo nivel. En el análisis de estas respuestas, se logró establecer que el saber metacomprensivo de los profesores influencia no solo el de sus alumnos sino, sino que además optimiza la percepción que este docente tiene acerca de la posibilidad de adquirir experticia lectora por parte de sus alumnos.
