Inés Suárez was the first Spanish woman to come to the territory later known as Chile. This paper examines her role in the conquista as presented in the documents of the period, as well as in historical and historico-fictional accounts produced this century in Chile and abroad. It concludes that the image of her as a brave, intelligent, and saintly woman, a cross between Florence Nightingale and Joan of Arc, is firmly rooted in reality.Inés Suárez fue la primera mujer española en llegar al territorio luego llamado Chile. Este trabajo examina su rol en la conquista de este país, en base a los documentos existentes de ese periodo, como también a las obras históricas e histórico-ficticias producidas en chile y el extranjero en este siglo. Se llega aquí a la conclusión de que la imagen de ella perdura, es decir, la de una mujer valiente, inteligente y piadosa, tiene un firme asidero en la realidad.
