dc.descriptionThis research analyzes the development of Anglo-Chilean international relations during the visit of Eduardo Frei to London in the period 1994-1998. In 1996, the signature of the Framework Cooperation Agreement between Chile and the European Economic Community was taking place and Britain took advantage of its need for ratification from all parties to force bilateral negotiations to benefit its interests, which led to the intensification of the contact. In this context, it is argued that the deep forces that underlie the contact are economic and strategic. On one hand, Frei’s tenure wanted to enhance their economic aperture. On the other, Britain wanted to increase their activities in Chilean commerce and count on Chilean support for their territories in the South Atlantic. This led to the establishment of defensive agreements, commercial treaties, and the discussion in our country about taxes on the importation of strong liqueur. For this, there were processed, through a qualitative content analysis, documents from The National Archives, the memories of the Chilean Foreign Ministry, and the National Library of the Chilean Congress.en-US
dc.descriptionEsta investigación analiza el desarrollo de las relaciones internacionales anglo-chilenas enmarcadas en la visita de Eduardo Frei a Londres durante el periodo 1994-1998. En 1996 se efectuaba la firma del Acuerdo Marco de Cooperación entre Chile y la Comunidad Económica Europea, por lo que, dada la necesidad de ratificación por parte de cada socio, Gran Bretaña aprovechó la coyuntura para forzar negociaciones bilaterales afín con sus intereses, resultando en la intensificación del contacto. En este contexto, se argumenta que las fuerzas profundas subyacentes al mismo eran de carácter económico y estratégico. Por un lado, el gobierno de Frei buscó potenciar su agenda de apertura económica. Por el otro, Gran Bretaña deseaba incrementar sus activos en el comercio chileno y contar con el apoyo del país para sus territorios en el Atlántico Sur. Lo anterior, dio por resultado el establecimiento de convenios defensivos, la firma de tratados comerciales y la discusión en nuestro país en torno al gravamen sobre importación de licores fuertes. Para ello, fueron procesadas, a través de un análisis de contenido cualitativo, fuentes provenientes de The National Archives, las memorias del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores chileno y la Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional.es-ES
