The paper analyses the significance of the Liberal Institute for the consolidation of neoliberalism in Brazil. First, important concepts are discussed to understand neoliberalism and the performance of pro-market think tanks, then the initiatives that sought to found a neoliberal institute in Brazil and the result that was successful with the Liberal Institute in 1983 are presented. A second moment presents the main founders of the center, their objectives with the institute and their business and political connections. Finally, the intellectuals responsible for the theoretical structure of the institute and for its publications are analyzed. The Liberal Institut played a central role in the dissemination of the free market and in the fabrication of a consensus favorable to neoliberalism in Brazil.El artículo analiza la importancia del Institulo Liberal para la consolidación del neoliberalismo en Brasil. Primeramente, se discuten los conceptos importantes para comprender al neoliberalismo y la atuación de los think tanks pró-mercado, a seguir, son presentadas las iniciativas que trataban de fundar un instituto neoliberal en Brasil lo cual tuvo éxito con el Instituto Liberal en 1983. A seguir, se presentan los principales fundadores del centro, sus objetivos con el instituto y sus conecciones empresariales y políticas. Por último, se analisan los intelectuales responsables por la estructura teórica del instituto y por las principales publicaciones del mismo. Se entiende que el Instituto Liberal jugó un papel central en la divulgación del libre mercado y en la fabricación de un consenso favorable al neoliberalismo en Brasil.O artigo analisa a importância do Instituto Liberal para a consolidação do neoliberalismo no Brasil. Em seguida, apresenta-se os principais fundadores do centro, seus objetivos com o instituto e suas conexões empresariais e políticas. Por último, se analisam os intelectuais responsáveis pela estruturação teórica do instituto e pelas publicações do mesmo. Entende-se que o Instituto Liberal desempenhou um papel central na divulgação do livre mercado e na fabricação um consenso favorável ao neoliberalismo no Brasil.
