The magnificent library of the Institute of Sanitary Management (INGESA) contains a large number of documents related to the health of Spain, in addition to bringing together the story of two great bibliophiles, the Marquis of Portugalete and the Marquis Riscal (Duke of Bailén). The INGESA building was built in 1946 and has served as offices for three institutions. This emblematic building is located on Calle de Alcalá in downtown Madrid, between the Puerta de Alcalá and the Plaza de Cibeles near the Parque del Retiro. Many important palaces had been built in this area; however, in the early 20th Century, some of them were demolished to make room for improvements under new municipal plans. The INGESA building is on the site of the demolished Portugalete palace and it has a magnificent library. Today the Institute of Sanitary Management (INGESA) occupies this splendid building. Elements of the former Portugalete Palace have been preserved within. The present structure accommodates current security and construction standards.
