We do a rereading “Al Paraná”, by Manuel José de Lavardén, considered the first poem about local landscape in present-day Argentina. Placed in its aesthetic and ideological coordinates (neo-classicism and physiocracy), the text responds to the intellectual medium during the last years of the colonial period, attesting as well to the impact of the press and the periodical press in that context. Following the immediate readings after its publication, we see that the first reception recognized its extraordinary character compared with the poor poetic production of the time. A brief discussion about these first readings, somewhat exaggerated, allows us, eventually, to reflect on the ways of reception and valuation of the text in verse in the period.Realizamos aquí una relectura de “Al Paraná”, de Manuel José de Lavardén, considerado el primer poema sobre el paisaje local en la actual Argentina. Ubicado en sus coordenadas estéticas e ideológicas (neoclásico y fisiocracia), el texto responde al clima intelectual de los últimos años del período colonial, relevando también el impacto de la imprenta y de la prensa periódica en ese contexto. Al seguir las lecturas realizadas de modo inmediato a su publicación, vemos que su recepción ya reconoció su carácter extraordinario en el pobre panorama poético de la época. Una breve polémica desatada en torno de esas lecturas, algo grandilocuentes, nos permite, finalmente, indagar en los modos de lectura y valoración de los textos en verso en el período.
