In the 8th century the Iberian Peninsula was conquered by the Muslims. Areas are established where there are exchanges and tensions between different ethnic and cultural groups, in addition to non-static relationships between different political actors. This is a porous and undefined border scenario where we witness the presence of knights of plebeian origin who become part of an urban patriciate, or members of the feudal elite who, for different reasons, are relegated from the most important power circles. There are border spaces, but also border people, who live on the margins, who move between classes and estates, who live in the interstices of classifications that, we conjecture, are operative to understanding this historical reality. In its own way, this is reflected in some narrative representations, crossed by a certain political and discursive logic, which account for the forms of ostentation of sectors of the medieval aristocracy with peculiar sociological features. In function of the problematics planted, we consider it pertinent to review the concepts of leisure class and conspicuous consumption, created by Thorstein Veblen at the end of the 19th century. It´s been concepts not much used by medievalists, but they deserve a treatment and a series of comments. Let´s keep in mind that in his writings, Veblen has specific references, but determining one´s for his expository scheme, to the Middle Ages and to some stories of that time. It is important, then, to critically reflect on the contributions of this thinker, and the use of the analytical tools he provides us.En el siglo VIII la península ibérica es conquistada por los musulmanes. Quedan establecidas áreas donde hay intercambios y tensiones entre diferentes grupos étnicos y culturales, además de relaciones cambiantes entre los distintos actores políticos. Se trata de un escenario de frontera poroso e indefinido, en el que atestiguamos la presencia de caballeros de origen plebeyo que devienen en parte de un patriciado urbano, o de integrantes de la elite feudal que, por diferentes motivos, son relegados de los círculos de poder más importantes. Existen, entonces, espacios, pero también personas, fronterizas, que viven en los márgenes, que se desplazan entre las clases y los estamentos, que habitan en los intersticios de las clasificaciones que, conjeturamos, son operativas para entender la realidad histórica. Esto queda plasmado, a su modo, en algunas representaciones narrativas, atravesadas por una determinada lógica política y discursiva, que dan cuenta de las formas de ostentación de sectores de la aristocracia medieval con rasgos sociológicos peculiares. En función de las problemáticas enunciadas, consideramos pertinente revisar los conceptos de clase ociosa (leisure class) y consumo conspicuo (conspicuous consumption), propuestos por Thorstein Veblen a fines del siglo XIX. Se trata de términos poco empleados por los medievalistas, pero que ameritan un tratamiento y una serie de comentarios. Tengamos presente que, en sus escritos, Veblen hace referencias puntuales, pero determinantes para su esquema expositivo, a la Edad Media y a algunos relatos de esa época. Resulta importante, entonces, reflexionar críticamente sobre los aportes de este pensador, y el uso de las herramientas analíticas que nos suministra.
