Representations of otherness and foreignness constitute fundamental elements in the Chilean adventure comic Mawa, created by Juan Marino for Jungla Magazine and published by Editorial Zig-Zag between 1967 and 1969. This research examines how otherness is configured in the episodes set in the fictional Brazilian Mato Grosso, focusing on three interrelated dimensions: the construction of the feminine, liminality as a marker of difference in indigenous communities, and the significance of the masculine-foreign in the narrative. As part of a broader investigation, this article focuses specifically on examining how the condition of foreignness is articulated in the work, contributing to the understanding of the dynamics of alterity in Chilean comics of the period. This analysis is structured around three main axes: the association between the concept of foreigner and masculinity, the processes of exoticization of the main character, and the characterization of Mawa as a foreign and migrant figure. Through a discursive analysis, the archetypes of the adventure genre and their interaction with the historical context of production are explored, revealing the tensions between the sociocultural representations of the time and contemporary readings.Este estudio analiza las representaciones de la otredad en la historieta chilena Mawa, personaje de aventuras creado por el guionista Juan Marino para la Revista Jungla. Esta investigación se enfoca en los episodios de Mawa publicados por la de Editorial Zig-Zag entre 1967 y 1969, en los que el personaje habita el Mato Grosso. La otredad se verá representada en tres áreas: la primera en cómo se representa lo femenino en el relato; la segunda en cómo lo liminal es signo de alteridad en el mundo de los pueblos originarios según Marino; y la tercera en la relación de lo masculino como extranjero y cómo ello afecta la historia tanto de la heroína como la de los pueblos que se cobijan en este hábitat. El texto ofrece un análisis desde el discurso, asumiendo los arquetipos que se presentan en la historieta de aventuras, sin dejar de lado la manera en cómo dichos arquetipos permean la lectura desde su contexto histórico, generando una tensión constante en las distintas sociedades que se representan en las historias de la revista con el pensamiento actual. Este artículo es parte de un proyecto investigativo mayor y en este caso se revisará específicamente el tema de lo extranjero en la obra.
