This article examines the theoretical genealogy of the anthropological concept of culture by identifying two major epistemological patterns that have shaped its historical development: the Enlightenment tradition and the Romantic tradition. Through a historical and conceptual reconstruction, the study argues that these currents represent not only divergent philosophical positions but also theoretical frameworks that continue to organize the main debates within contemporary anthropology. The Enlightenment perspective, rooted in modern rationalism, conceives culture as a universal phenomenon that can be explained through general laws, comparative models, and systematic approaches. This orientation is expressed in evolutionary, functionalist, structuralist, and cultural materialist approaches. In contrast, the Romantic tradition emphasizes the historical, particular and symbolic dimensions of cultural phenomena, influencing historical particularism, psychological anthropology, and interpretive approaches. The article argues that this tension between universalism and particularism, explanation and understanding, structure and meaning, remains a constitutive feature of the discipline. Finally, it suggests that anthropology faces the challenge of overcoming this duality by developing a theory of culture capable of integrating the material, symbolic, and historical dimensions of social life.en-US
