In this paper, we will make first, a brief analysis of theevolution of the political representation model. Similarly, we will examinethe most relevant elements that directly influence the allegedcrisis of that model. Along with this, we will review how political representationand citizen participation in a representative democracycoexist in a party system, focusing specifically on the analysis aboutthe influence that could lead to the inclusion in our legal system of amechanism of direct democracy. Therefore, we will try to elucidatethe potential benefits that this could produce in strengthening thedemocratic system. Finally, we will expose the popular initiative andthe possible political and legal complications that would involve itsincorporation into the political and national legal system.En el presente trabajo realizaremos, en primer lugar, un breve análisis de la evolución del modelo de representación política. Del mismo modo, examinaremos aquellos elementos más relevantes que influyen directamente en la supuesta crisis del mismo. Junto con lo anterior nos detendremos en  revisar cómo la representación política y la participación ciudadana conviven en un sistema democrático representativo de partidos, centrándonos específicamente en el análisis respecto de la influencia que podría generar la incorporación en nuestro ordenamiento jurídico de un mecanismo de democracia directa. Así, intentaremos dilucidar las posibles ventajas que ello pudiera producir en el fortalecimiento del sistema democrático. Finalmente, realizaremos una exposición de la iniciativa popular de ley y las posibles complicaciones políticas y jurídicas que implicaría su incorporación en el sistema político y jurídico nacional.
