The formulation of a "National ageing and old age policy" in Chile (1996) marks an event in our country and, without doubt, the living conditions and rights of elderly people will be an increasing interest and debate from the beginning of the international year of the elderly (1999) established by the United Nations (UN). Nevertheless, the author warns of the risk of thematising old age according to a unique type of human: Male/retired/urban.
