In this work I propose an initial model of argumentative complexity from the theoretical framework of text linguistics. For this purpose, I have explored aspects of both the ability underlying the activity of speaking (the ἐνέργεια) and the product created by this competence (the ἔργον). The work supports the hypothesis that the ability or level of the ἐνέργεια is related to formal argumentative complexity (ἔργον) in many discourses. Broadly, this relationship has been only partially addressed.  In order to account the generative capacity (ἐνέργεια), I show some cases of the score in the Tasks in Critical Thinking Test obtained by university students, as well as the product (ἔργον) the same subjects produced. This product, an essay, has been analyzed qualitatively following the procedures of the grounded Theory. The results showed that the subjects with higher scores in the ability of ἐνέργεια produced more intricate essays, in terms of argumentative complexity. This research constitutes an initial endeavor to establish a normative model of the notion of “argumentative complexity”.RESUMENEn este trabajo propongo un modelo inicial de complejidad argumentativa desde el marco teórico de la lingüística del texto. Para este propósito, he explorado aspectos tanto de la capacidad subyacente a la actividad de habla (la ἐνέργεια), como del producto que es creado por esta competencia (el ‘ἔργον). El trabajo sustenta la hipótesis de que la capacidad o nivel de ἐνέργεια está relacionada con la complejidad argumental formal (‘ἔργον) en varios tipos de discursos. En términos generales, el estudio de esta relación ha sido abordado muy parcialmente. Para dar cuenta de la capacidad generativa (ἐνέργεια), muestro algunos casos de los puntajes obtenidos por estudiantes universitarios que han respondido el Test de Pensamiento Crítico, así como del producto (ἔργον) generado por los mismos informantes. Este producto, un ensayo, ha sido analizado cualitativamente a partir de los procedimientos de la teoría fundamentada. Los resultados muestran que los sujetos con una puntuación mayor en capacidad de ἐνέργεια producen ensayos más complejos, en términos de complejidad argumentativa. Esta investigación constituye un esfuerzo inicial para establecer un modelo normativo de la noción de “complejidad argumentativa”.
