The aim of this article is to illustrate how indigenous migrant peoples (quechuas and aymaras) are carriers of a pluri-identity forged on the basis of nationalism, religion, indigenous identity, gender, class, and the migrant condition. It is argued that there is no all-embracing identity, but a pluri-identity from which individuals highlight or conceal aspects of their identity according to prevailing circumstances. In this context, it is not the identity of a person that is in crisis, but the restricted nature of the concept. Our analysis is theoretically based from a strategic-normative constructivist standpoint and the use of extensive field work that includes 46 in-depth interviews, as well as observations of national and international religious practices (Lima and Tacna [Peru] and Santa Cruz and La Paz [Bolivia]), and discussion groups in the cities of Iquique and Arica. Consequently, the pluri-identity appears as a response to a range of possibilities, crisis and complexities, as feelings, deinstitutionalization and instrumentality in the production of identities become ever-more relevant.en-US
