El artículo retoma un episodio del campo intelectual paraguayo postdictadura, las polémicas que surgieron a partir de las declaraciones de Augusto Roa Bastos sobre la supuesta inexistencia de la literatura paraguaya. Sin embargo, las declaraciones de Roa no son aquí recordadas en su clave polémica, sino para deshilvanar las complejas articulaciones teóricas que las fundamentan, las cuales intentan poner sobre la superficie una serie de problemáticas vinculadas a los fenómenos de diglosia y a la estructura colonial característicos de la sociedad paraguaya. El bilingüismo es experimentado a través de una fuerte estratificación social y lingüística, la cual produce también que la oposición entre oralidad y escritura sea percibida como infranqueable.The starting point of this article is an episode in the Paraguayan post-dictatorship intellectual field: the polemic provoked by Augusto Roa Bastos’s statement about the absence of Paraguayan Literature. The article, however, will not explore the controversy underlying the statement, but rather the complex theoretical ideas that sustain it. The articulation of these ideas reveals issues related to diglossia and the colonialist social structure that survives in Paraguay. Bilingualism is experienced through a strong social and linguistic stratification. As a result, the relationship between orality and literacy is perceived as an inviolable opposition.
