Based on a research project, the following paper deals with the meanings which users associate with existing architectural works in Central Chile- from La Serena to Temuco- Such meanings are commented from the point of view of their possible contribution to a profile of what is "our own" architecture. The topic of the "identification with. Such identification is the result of the coincidence between what is actually constructed and the image the average citizen has, since he is the receiver of the uses and values the specialist proposes.En base a resultados obtenidos en investigación científica realizada, se analizan significados que los usuarios asocian a obras arquitectónicas reales de las ciudades de Chile central -entre La Serena y Temuco-, comentándolos desde su posible aporte a un perfil de lo propio en arquitectura. Se aborda el nivel de la `identificación con lo efectivamente existente' que resulta de la coincidencia entre lo construido y la imagen que maneja el ciudadano común, destinatario genérico de los usos y valores que la obra posibilita y transmite como propuesta intencionada del especialista.
