This paper arises from the current need for understanding a concept such as Sustainable Development which is been applied to the professional, academic and political field. Therefore, what paper intends is to introduce the conceptual meaning of Sustainable Development, to set the context, to understand process evolution and to draw with a Latin American classic example. To do that, this article is organized as follow: first it is mentioned a global economic policy context in the second half of the century. After that it is made a theoretical framework to know the meaning and different emphasis related to Sustainable Development. From this viewpoint, it is showed agendas to advance to this way of development, which highlight local level as a solid ground to start. Finally it is showed a well know planning and management case study, the Curitiba city.Dado el actual requerimiento por comprender un concepto tan recurrente en el campo profesional, académico y político como es el desarrollo sustentable, es que ocurre la elaboración de este artículo. Por tanto lo que se pretende entregar es el significado conceptual del desarrollo sustentable, situarlo en un contexto, entender el proceso gestacional e ilustrar con algún ejemplo clásico latinoamericano. Para este fin el artículo se organiza de la siguiente manera: en primer lugar se hace referencia a un contexto global político económico existente en la segunda mitad del presente siglo. Luego se elabora un marco teórico de referencia para conocer el significado y los diferentes enfoques asociados al desarrollo sustentable. A partir de ello, se plantean agendas para concretar y avanzar hacia esta modalidad de desarrollo, las cuales enfatizan el nivel local como sólido punto de partida. Es así como se muestra un caso de planificación y gestión sustentable mundialmente reconocido, la ciudad de Curitiba.
