| dc.description | En su viaje realizado por el Desierto de Atacama en el verano de 1853 - 54, R.A Philippi nos entrega una muy valiosa descripción de la zona desértica, tanto desde el punto de vista mineralógico y geográfico, como desde el punto de vista histórico y antropológico. Objeto del presente artículo es rendir un sincero homenaje a su autor al haberse cumplido (julio 1994), los 90 años de su fallecimiento. Se destaca, en especial, los aportes antropológicos del autor, en el área de la Antropología Física y la Lingüística de las etnias descritas por él en el actual territorio de la II Región de Chile (Antofagasta).

During his Journeythrough the Atacama Desert, in Summer 1853-54, R.A. Philippi offered us the most valuable description of the area at that time, not only from a mineralogical and geographical point of view but particularly from a historical and an anthropological one. The object of the present article is to point out his important contribution in the anthropological field, as a sincere hommage in the 90th anniversary of his departure (July 1904). We intend to stress his peculiarcontribution in the area of the Physical and Linguistic Anthropology of the ethnic groups described by him in the today’s territory of the Chilean II Region.
